Sunseeker Fire

At approximately 00:45 on 7th May 2011 Griffin Towage were requested by Poole Harbour Control on behalf of Dorset Fire & Rescue services to mobilise our firefighting tug Goliath to assist fighting a fire on a 34m Sunseeker motor yacht ashore on the quay at Sunseeker’s yard in Poole.

Goliath let go her mooring by 01:00 and was through the Poole Lifting Bridge and on scene by 01:08. Two firefighters were put aboard Goliath to help co-ordinate the operation.

The fire service had already been fighting the fire for a couple of hours. Their efforts had reduced the flames above the hull, but they had been unable to have much effect on the area inside the hull, which was still on fire.

Once Goliath started to attack the fire from the bow, the fire quickly reduced as we discharged water directly into the heart of the fire. After 10 minutes the fire had been reduced to a smoulder, producing far less smoke. The fire pump capacity is (22,700litres/min)

After then standing by for approx half an hour the fire services had the situation under control, stood us down, so Goliath returned to berth by 02:25.
